Part time, fringe ex-players like Leyritz can freely admit that they cheated without backlash, as 25th men trying to get any edge that they can to arrive and stay in the big leagues can easily be rationalized. They have nothing to lose, and they almost get a pat on the back for admitting it. Confession comes easy for them, and is without repercussion. The stars don't have that luxury of understanding, and the repercussions are limitless.

Everybody in baseball knew that Garciaparra, if he could get past the injury problems that have limited him to 143 games the past two seasons, could be the same hitter that he always has been. He hasn't disappointed there. In 36 games after returning from an early-season strain of a rib-cage muscle, Garciaparra is hitting .357 with six homers, 36 RBIs, 16 doubles and a 1.031 OPS. In more than 150 plate appearances, he's struck out only five times.
Since May 5, when the Dodgers began the day at 12-17, L.A. has won 19 of 25 games. Garciaparra has played in every one and is hitting .390, with an OPS of better than 1.000.
"He's just so athletic. I think if you gave him six weeks and told him to go out there at any position, I think in six weeks he'd be an All-Star-caliber player. All he needs to do is to keep himself on the field."
